Welcome to this multiple part blog series titled: “By Faith”. In this series we will discuss those precious saints of whom the world was not worthy. We will first turn to the eleventh chapter of the book of Hebrews to see how they lived their lives by faith; then we will turn to the different books of the Bible to see the details of their lives.

As we look at real examples of real individuals who lived their lives by faith not by sight; I will ask that you keep this in mind! None of these individuals; no not one of these great saints had a Bible!

What is faith?

Before we get started let’s define the word “faith“. No, we will not be performing a quick Google search to find the answer. However, we will perform a real time search in the Living Word of God. For the writer of Hebrews defines for us:

“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”- (Hebrews 11:1 KJV)

If you have accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior you have been saved through and justified by faith.

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.”- (Ephesians 2:8-9 KJV)
“Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.”- (Romans 5:1-2 KJV)

The basis of our belief

Our faith is the basis for our belief; our belief in our resurrected Savior. For we did not have the opportunity to witness Christ’s resurrection but when the Gospel of God’s grace was presented to us we believed it.

“Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.”- (John 20:29 KJV)

It is in this belief that we have our hope. Our hope in the eternal life that is awaiting all of those who have placed their belief in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

“That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.”- (Titus 3:7 KJV)

The hope of eternal life that our God our Father promised before the world began:

“In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;”- (Titus 1:2 KJV)

Through faith

It is through faith that we understand and believe that the worlds were framed by the Word of our God. Our God who created the heavens and the earth. The writer of Hebrews and the writer of Genesis records that:

“Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.”- (Hebrews 11:3 KJV)
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth."- (Genesis 1:1 KJV)

Our God who sits in His throne in the heavens spoke all things into existence. It is by faith that we believe that Our God hung the earth on nothing! A fact that was recorded for us by Job; a man who would provide for us the greatest example of patience. Job records that:

“He stretcheth out the north over the empty place, and hangeth the earth upon nothing.”- (Job 26:7 KJV)

By faith, we believe that at the utterance of our God’s voice the earth melted!

“The heathen raged, the kingdoms were moved: he uttered his voice, the earth melted.”- (Psalm 46:6 KJV)

It is by faith that we believe that our God, who stretched out the heavens and spread forth the earth is the same God who gives breath to the people and the spirit to them that walk the earth!

“Thus saith God the Lord, he that created the heavens, and stretched them out; he that spread forth the earth, and that which cometh out of it; he that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein:” - (Isaiah 42:5 KJV)

It is by faith that we understand and believe all that we read in the Living Word of God!
