Regardless of where you are in the world there is a great possibility that you have heard the story of the prodigal son. But, do you recall his elder brother?

the ELDER brother

As we revisit the story of the prodigal son; we will turn our attention to his older brother.

The brother who was working diligently and abiding to his Father:

"Now his elder son was in the field: and as he came and drew nigh to the house, he heard musick and dancing."
(Luke 15:25 KJV)

The brother who grew angry with the homecoming that his prodigal brother received:

"And he was angry, and would not go in: therefore came his father out, and intreated him."
(Luke 15:28 KJV)

Now that you remember the elder brother; do you remember his frustrations?

Good, faithful and loyal

Remember, this is the good, faithful and loyal son! The one who has been at his fathers side the entire time.

So there is some understanding of his frustrations to his father:

"And he answering said to his father, Lo, these many years do I serve thee, neither transgressed I at any time thy commandment: and yet thou never gavest me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends. But as soon as this thy son was come, which hath devoured thy living with harlots, thou hast killed for him the fatted calf"
(Luke 15:29-30 KJV)

But, the elder son had missed something!

What did he miss?

“Art with me”

The elder brother missed the fact that as long as he was walking faithfully with his Father; he wanted for nothing!

"And he said unto him, Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine."
(Luke 15:31 KJV)

All that was his Father’s was his! He had his pick of the choice meat, the fine clothes and jewels. For what was his Father’s was his.

Does this story sound familiar?

How often?

How often have “we” as Christ followers forgotten that:

We benefit from an everlasting covenant:

"And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from them, to do them good; but I will put my fear in their hearts, that they shall not depart from me."
(Jeremiah 32:40 KJV)

And, that we belong to that Great Shepherd of the Sheep:

"Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant."
(Hebrews 13:20 KJV)

When?

This son was looking at what he “thought” he was not getting. While overlooking the overflowing, bounty that he already had.

Again, I will ask; does this sound familiar?

Reader, when are we going to stop repeating the same sins of old and start claiming all of the richness that is in Christ Jesus?

…when?…
