“The Apostle of Prayer” would often spend up to thirty days and nights in constant prayer; sometimes spending as much as thirty six hours in constant intercession.
Who was the “Apostle of Prayer”? His name is Praying John Hyde!
Today, we will revisit the life of one of the world’s greatest saints.
John Hyde
Born November 9, 1865, many would say that it was a wonderful thing to hear John Hyde pray in India. For the majority of John’s young life he had yearned to go to India; by the year of 1892 John would reach this goal.
John would travel along with a few companions and soon his prayer life would become well known. Alongside his companions he would spend days and nights travailing, groaning and agonizing in constant prayer!
John believed wholeheartedly in the power of intercession. His rewards from his prayer life were so strong that just being around him would cause others to began groaning in agony themselves.
Shout the victory of Jesus Christ
Like many of the world’s mightiest prayer warriors, John Hyde spent most of his life behind the scenes. He craved no attention, he wanted much of nothing; all he cared about was the souls that he was entrusted to pray for.
Around the year of 1909, John had began feeling a bit under the weather and decided to see a doctor. During his examination, the doctor realized that John’s heart was no longer in it’s original position! John’s heart had shifted from the left side over toward the right side of his chest!
The doctor asked John what had he been doing; to which John Hyde just gave “a smile”.
John would spend his last days confined to a bed or wheelchair and though he preferred praying on his knees; he was still interceding.
Shout the Victory
On February 17, 1912, all of the hours spent groaning, crying and travailing in prayer for souls had taken its toll. John Hyde had made it to the end of his road.
And, at the end of his trail stood the one who awaits us all! John’s final words as he crossed from this life into the next were: “Shout the Victory of Jesus Christ.”
John Hyde, devoted his life to prayer leaving this world an example of what true intercession looks like.
Having mastered the greatest of all vocations; John Hyde, also known as “The Apostle of Prayer” was one of those of whom this world was not worthy!
