Our Lord’s Word provides many accounts that are often told and retold and it also contains many accounts that are often pushed to the side. Today, we will take a look at one of those accounts that many choose to overlook.
This account was recorded by Luke in his version of our Lord’s Gospel; let’s turn to Luke and take a look.
Certain Rich Man and Lazarus
As recorded by Luke, there was once a certain rich man and a very poor man. The rich man was covered in fine linen and could get the best of all things. The poor man was covered in sores and laid outside the rich mans gates.
“There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day: And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores" (Luke 16:19-20 KJV)
Each day the certain rich man filled his belly while the poor man desired only the crumbs from the rich man’s table.
And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.”(Luke 16:21 KJV)
Let’s imagine
Imagine the rich man’s friends and visitors tripping over Lazarus as they went in to visit their friend. Imagine what they said about this poor man who was full of sores; this poor man who had dogs hanging around licking him!
Can you see all of the rich man’s visitors tripping over themselves to get to his “splendid buffets”. What regard they “must have had” for the man laying “in need” right before them!
Eternity awaits
Eternity awaits us all; and eventually the time came for both men to pass from this life into the next.
“And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.” (Luke 16:22-23 KJV)
The rich man would go to the place of eternal torment and Lazarus would go on to eternal peace!
Mercy
As the certain rich man looked upward from hell, he was able to see the poor man whom he once had no regard for, now living in eternal peace.
“And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.” (Luke 16:24 KJV)
It was in this moment, that the rich man sought the mercy that he once had no time to show! The problem with the rich man’s revelation is that it was too late!
Three revelations
Taking a closer look we see that our Lord’s Gospel affords us three revelations from this one account!
One revelation is that there is no mercy in hell. We see the rich man crying out for mercy asking only for a drip of water to cool his tongue!
The second revelation is that people pray in hell but there is no one to answer! Just as the rich man was praying in hell; people are praying in hell now!
Finally, the idea of praying to saints! The rich man was praying in hell to Abraham and Abraham could do nothing to help him! There goes the idea of praying to saints!
Often never told
Here we have a true account, given by our Lord and Savior as a warning for all of the world. For some reason, this account is often forgotten or left untold. Have you ever wondered why? Why, have this account, which takes us from time into eternity often get overlooked?
As you ponder that, I will leave you with this! Eternity awaits us all and there are only two destinations; one destination is eternal peace the other destination is eternal torment.
One Way
There is only one way to avoid eternal torment and that is through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. If you are reading this today and have not accepted our Christ as Lord; now is the time!
For as our precious brother Paul states:
"That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation." (Romans 10:9-10 KJV)
