Today, we will take a closer look at our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ as a “Man of Sorrows”. The account comes from the precious prophet Isaiah who records the prophetic account for us in the fifty third chapter of his book!
Later, we will turn to chapter fifty three of the book of Isaiah but before that we will define the word prophecy.
What is a prophecy?
What is as prophecy? Simply, a prophecy is a prophetic vision given to a prophet that comes to pass. If the prophet states it and it happens the prophecy has been fulfilled.
For example, let’s take a look at the prophetic vision on the coming of John the Baptist as recorded by the precious prophet Isaiah; in Isaiah chapter forty verse three:
“The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.” - (Isaiah 40:3 KJV)
Now, let’s turn to the Gospel of Jesus Christ as recorded by Matthew, Mark, Luke and John to see the fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophetic vision.
Matthew records in his account of the Gospel of Jesus Christ that the prophet Esaias(Isaiah) spoke of the coming of John the Baptist:
“For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.” - (Matthew 3:3 KJV)
At the same time of Matthew’s record; John the Baptist was preaching in the wilderness! Mark, Luke and John also records the same account in their record of the Gospel of Jesus Christ:
“ As it is written in the prophets, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.” - (Mark 1:2-3 KJV)
“As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.” - (Luke 3:4 KJV)
“He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias.” - (John 1:23 KJV)
Now, that we have defined a prophecy and a prophet we can turn to today’s discussion.
Let us turn to chapter fifty three of the book of Isaiah and see what this precious prophet had to say about a “Man of Sorrows”.
Man of Sorrows
A tender plant, as a root out of a dry ground possessing no comeliness nor beauty that we would desire Him.
"For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him."- (Isaiah 53:2 KJV)
Afflicted, bruised for our iniquities, wounded for our transgressions; while carrying our sorrows, grief and chastisement. So that through His stripes we could be healed.
"He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed." - (Isaiah 53:3-5 KJV)
Knowing this still we esteemed Him not. Instead we have gone astray; turning to our own way. Having no regard for Him though He carried our iniquities. For we know that our Lord our God laid upon Him the iniquities of us all.
"All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth."- (Isaiah 53:6-7 KJV)
During His oppression and affliction, He said nothing! He was led to prison as the lamb is led to the slaughter. As the lamb speaks not; He spoke not as He was led to judgment. The man who had done no violence and in whom no deceit could be found: was cut off from the land of the living. He would make His grave with the wicked and with the rich in death.
He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken. And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth."- (Isaiah 53:8-9 KJV)
Our Lord our God
Our Lord our God, was willing to permit Him to be bruised and to place upon Him our grief.
"Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand."-(Isaiah 53:10 KJV)
He was to suffer as the offering for our sins. In seeing the travailing of His soul our Lord our God would be satisfied. Satisfied that His righteous servant would bear the iniquities of many and through those iniquities provide justification.
"He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities"- (Isaiah 53:11 KJV)
“Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:”- (Romans 5:1 KJV)
“Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.” - (Romans 5:9 KJV)
Our Lord our God would divide Him a portion with the great; then He would divide the spoil with the strong. Because He poured out his soul unto death; bearing the sins of many so that He could make intercession for the transgressor.
"Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors."- (Isaiah 53:11 KJV)
This is the record from the prophet Isaiah. He recorded this about our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ long before our Lord and Savior came down to this earth.
As we sit here today, our Lord and Savior has come, fulfilled the prophecy and returned to His throne in the heavens.
He will return one day
He will return one day; not as a “Man of Sorrows” but as the final judge of all of the earth.
"Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead."-(Acts 17:31 KJV)
It does not matter if you call Him the “Man of Sorrows” or the “final judge”; what does matter is whether or not you know Him as your Lord and Savior.
Do you know Him?
If not, now is the time for you to confess out of your mouth that Jesus Christ is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead! For as Paul states:
"That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation."- (Romans 10:9-10 KJV)
When He returns it will not be as a tender plant; when He returns it will be to take vengeance on those who do not know God or obey His Gospel. You do not want to be one of those who will face His wrath! Confess and believe while you still can!
